DECORATIONS FOR THE SCIENTISTS
 
President of the Russian Federation decorated a large group of scientists with Russian orders for their contribution to the development of national science, training students and post-graduates, fruitful work in the field of science organising as well as on occasion of the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On October 19, director of the Institute of Geography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Academician Vladimir Vasilievich Vorobyov is 70.

SCIENTIFIC EVENTS IN NOVEMBER
 
 
THE COUNCIL OF THE NOVOSIBIRSK SCIENTIFIC CENTRE COMPUTER NET WORKS
 
Last week there was a session of the Council of the computer net of the Novosibirsk Scientific Centre. The Council summarised its work during last summer and discussed new rules for using information and telecommunication resources of the net of the Novosibirsk Scientific Centre.
 
RESULTS OF THE INSPECTION OF THE INSTITUTES OF THE BURYAT SCIENTIFIC CENTRE
 
The session of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences held on October 12 had been almost completely dedicated to the summarising of the results of complex inspection of two institutes belonging to the Buryat Scientific Centre.
 
ABOUT "DEAD WATER" AND OTHER EFFECTS
 
Dr. Ye. Yermanyuk won in the contest among young scientists from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His work entitled "Force Interaction of Internal Waves with a Drowned Body" won the M. A. Lavrentyev Memorial Prize. Later Dr. Yermanyuk was decorated with the medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his studies of hydrodynamics of bodies in the liquids with non­homogeneous density. The paper deals with the results of Dr. Yermanyuk.
 
EXPERIMENTAL GEOMECHANICS IS ON THE HOUR
 
On October 7, the International Conference "Geodynamics and Tense State of Earth`s Depths" finished its work at the Lesser Hall of the House of Scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It had been organised by the Institute of Mining of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
 
RIFTS OF BAIKAL LAKE AS GEOLOGICAL ANNALS OF CONTINENTS
 
Scientists from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, India and other countries took part in the workshop "Genesis of rifts of the intercontinental continents: Baikal rift system and other continental rifts" in Irkutsk.
 
THE TUNGUS DETECTIVE, OR EQUATION WITHOUT KNOWN QUANTITIES
 
During the conference held in Krasnoyarsk and dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Tungus Phenomenon an appeal had been read from the Spacemen`s International Ecological Expedition to the United Nations with the proposition to create the Planetary Ecological Park No. 1 on the territory of Evenkia. An honorary guest of the conference, spaceman Gheorgy Grechko supposes that in future, when the main part of the Earth`s surface will be covered with asphalt, our great-grandchildren will be dying to come to this place to see virgin nature.
 
OIL AND GAS: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
 
The jubilee scientific and practical conference "Extraction, Treating and Transportation of Oil and Gas" took place in early October in Tomsk. It had been organised by the Institute of Oil Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and TomskGazProm, Ltd., and dedicated to the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and 30th anniversary of the Institute.
 
WATER FROM ANGARA IN THE PRISM OF AN INTERNATIONAL PROJECT
 
For the third time participants of the joint Russian-Canadian project for co-operation in the field of environment had gathered in Irkutsk. They discussed problems of water resources control in the basin of Angara river. A special attention had been paid to water quality as well as to the medical and ecological aspects of the problem.
 
ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY BEING DEVELOPED IN SIBERIA
 
On October 12 to 14, 1999, the workshop "Organic Geochemistry of Oil-Containing Rocks of Western Siberia" took place at the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
 
AN UNLOOKED-FOR EFFECT
 
The field of scientific interests of Prof. N. Uvarov (Institute of Solid State Chemistry and Mechanochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) is the investigation of solid electrolytes. His thesis (presented one and a half year ago) dealt with the study of ion conductivity of nano-composites. This topic, as his colleagues judge, is a "hot" one and may lead to interesting applications.
 
A KNIGHT AT THE CROSS-ROADS, OR HOW TO CATCH BOTH HARES AT ONCE
 
On September 21 to 24, a conference and exhibition-market were held in Novosibirsk. Both were dedicated to the perspectives of city development.
 
ANNOUNCEMENT!
 
For the first time in the history of libraries of the Academic Township an institute demised of its library. This is the Institute of Computing Technologies that transferred its library to the Division of the State Public Scientific and Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A specialised reading-hall on computing technology and informatics will be organised on its base.
