	AGREEMENT SUMMARISING VISIT TO CHINA On October 18, a four-days long visit of Vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Academician N. Dobretsov to China had been accomplished. According to the invitation of the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Prof. Lu Yongxiang, he took part in the International Symposium "Ecological Systems in North-eastern Asia in the city of Dalian. The Russian delegation included also Deputy Director of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics Prof. N. Kolchanov. In the course of the symposium Academician N. Dobretsov had initiated a discussion concerning creation of an international biological centre. The two leading participants of the centre should be Russia and China.
	AGREEMENT ON SCIENTIFIC CO-OPERATION between the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
	ONE OF THE FIRST "ACADEMIC PIONEERS" Prof. Boris Ivanovich Peshchevitsky who will be 70 on October 27, came from Leningrad to the Siberian township of science more than forty years ago when the township was being built.
	PRIZES FOR THE TOMSK PROFESSORS The Ukase giving prizes of the President of Russian Federation in the domain of education has been published. There are two professors from Tomsk among those who won the prizes. These are Yuri Petrovich Pokholkov, rector of the Tomsk Polytechnic University, and Boris Lvovich Agranovich, director of West Siberian Regional Centre for Social and informational technologies, Tomsk Polytechnic University.
	ON THE OCCASION OF THE 275th ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES A meeting summarising celebrations of the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 50th the 275th anniversary of the Irkutsk Scientific Centre took place at the Institute of Solar- Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
	CONGRATULATING A COLLEAGUE Ex-correspondent of "Science in Siberia" who successfully co-operated with our newspaper, Doctor of Economics, Prof. Alexander Sukhodolov had been designated a chairman of the regional economic committee and introduced into administrative committee.
	SEMICONDUCTORS-99 The Fourth National Conference on Physics of Semiconductors ("Semiconductors-99") will take place in Novosibirsk on 25 to 29 of October. This Scientific meeting developed the traditions established by previous conferences that had been arranged biannually in Nizhni Novgorod, Zelenogorsk and Moscow.
	PROBLEMS OF SIBERIAN VILLAGE On February 24 to 25, 1999, the Third National Scientific and Practical Conference "Siberian Village: Its History, Present State, Perspectives of Development" will take place in Omsk.
	STUDYING CRYSTALS OF LIFE Krasnoyarsk State University Graduates V. Presnyakov and A. Shabanov presented their work to the conference of young scientists that took place in Krasnoyarsk. The work concerns investigation of liquid crystal composites and was highly appreciated. The former of the authors had gained a scholarship from the President of Russia Foundation, while the latter, from the Regional Science Foundation.
	TWENTY YEARS OF THE SEMINAR All-Russian seminar "Dynamics of Multiphase Media" worked in October at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. It is twenty years that the seminar is being conducted regularly. Topics under consideration of the seminar are characterised with the interaction of fundamental and applied research and development.
	ULTRA-DISPERSE MATERIALS AND NANO-STRUCTURE The Second Inter-regional Conference dedicated to the memory of Prof. Staver, rector of Technical University, took place in Krasnoyarsk on October 5 to 7.
	GEO-INFORMATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES: EXPERIENCE AND PERSPECTIVES Last week a workshop and on-site session of the Scientific Co-ordination Council of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences took place in Kemerovo. It was dedicated to informational technologies in geology and distance probing. The workshop had been organised on the base of the Kemerovo Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
	LINGUISTICS AND SCHOOL On November 3 to 5, there will be a scientific and practical conference "Linguistics and School" at the Altai State Univeresity. The conference is being organised by the Department of Philology and journalism of the Altai State University, the Department of Philology of the Altai Pedagogical University, and local Institute of Skill Development for Teachers.
	SCHOOL-SEMINAR OF THE YOUNG SCIENTISTS OF TRANS-BAIKAL REGION At the end of September the School-Seminar for the young scientists of Trans-Baikal Region "Problems of Sustainable Development of the Region" took place at the Baikal Institute of Nature Exploitation (the city of Ulan Udeh). It was dedicated to the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
	GENETIC ENGINEERING AS A TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE Nowadays a specific interest to the development of biotechnology is being observed all over the world. The results obtained by the national scientists were reviewed at the National Symposium "Investigations of Genome and Genetic Transformation of Plants" that took place in Irkutsk.
	TRAINING PERSONNEL FOR THE "POST-OFFICE BOX" On October 15, the Seversk Technologic Institute of the Tomsk Polytechnic University is 40.
	VACANT POSITIONS The Specialised Educational and Scientific Centre of the Novosibirsk State University announces about vacant positions.

	WE`RE FAITHFUL TO OUR YOUTH AS ALWAYS The fortieth anniversary of the Novosibirsk State University was celebrated as a feast for all the Academic Township. At the Design Institute of Scientific Instruments this day had also been counted as an intimate holiday. As a matter of fact, 29 graduates of our university work there, including the director of the institute, young persons who finished their education this year, the scientific secretary, the head of the experimental workshop, heads of laboratories and so on.
