ONE OF THE PLEIAD OF SIBERIAN ALGEBRAISTS
 
The Head Scientific Research Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Novosibirsk State University Dimitry Matveyevich Smirnov is 80.
 
THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SIBERIAN BRANCH OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES
 
Soon the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences will be 30. On this occasion on November 17 and 18 the Presidium of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences will have its on-site session "Scientific Maintenance of Agricultural Production in Siberia."
 
OMSK STATE UNIVERSITY IS 25
 
The Omsk State University celebrates its 25th anniversary. In late October and early November festival events connected with the jubilee had been organised. They included parties, exhibitions of the museum of university`s history and the museum of archaeology and ethnography, of the scientific publications by the professors, concerts and the conference "Contemporary Society."

THE FIRST INTERDEPARTMENTAL SUPER-COMPUTER CENTRE IN RUSSIA OPENED
 
In 1996, mutual resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry for Science and Technology of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research decreed organisation of the Interdepartmental Super-computer Centre. It will be a governmental scientific institution. The ceremony of opening of this centre took place in the building of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Leninsky Prospect. Prime-Minister V. Putin took part in the ceremony.
 
THE CARNEGIE FOUNDATION WILL SUPPORT SCHOLARS
 
At the end of October there was a meeting at the Tomsk State University that may seriously affect the development of the humanities in Siberia. Administrations of the University and Tomsk region received delegations of the Carnegie Foundation and the Open Society Institute.
 
TWO EXHIBITIONS AT A MUSEUM
 
In late October, two exhibitions had been opened at the Tomsk Regional Local Museum. Those are "Authorities in Tomsk Yesterday, To-day and To-morrow" and "Along the Great Siberian Road." The exhibitions were opened by the chairman of the State Duma of Tomsk Region, head of the Board of Trustees of the museum V. Mal`tsev who worked hard to arrange repair of the museum halls and make it possible to show at last its unique collections.
 
THE KNOWLEDGE PROVED IN PRACTICE
 
On the last day of October the Novosibirsk State University received the Fourth International Ecological Conference for Students "Ecology of Russia and Adjacent Territories. Ecological Catalysis."
 
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES OF 21st CENTURY
 
Human education, health, culture, spiritual and intellectual development, interaction of education and geopolitics, education and culture will attract attention of the International Congress "Novel Technologies of Science and Education at the Turn of Millennium." The congress will begin its work in Novosibirsk on November 22. The previous International Congress under the auspices of UNESCO took place in Novosibirsk in September, 1995.

Wide use of computer nets for spreading and exchange of scientific information doesn`t lay aside values of conventional media for publishing scientific results, i. e. books and periodicals. The filial branch of the State Public Scientific and Technological Library, the Joint Institute of History, Philology and Phlosophy, the Institute of Economics and Organisation of Industry as well as partner institutions feel deep gratitude to the Open Society Institute for substantial widening of access to new periodicals in 1999.

On November 7, a meeting took place at the Academic Township of Novosibirsk. It was dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the October revolution. The organisers of the meeting were the district committee of the Communist party of Russian Federation, the Council of Veterans, the district division of People`s Patriotic Union of Russia, the joint Syndicate Committee of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The most part of the participants were retired people for whom the "red October" is a lifelong tradition.
