	MONUMENT TO THE GEOLOGIST–SCIENTIST Installation of the bust monument to Academician Andrey Alekseevich Trofimuk, the founder of the Institute of Petroleum-Gas Geology and Geophysics of the SB RAS, has taken place at the Museum of the Institute on August 16.
	THE BEST PROPHET OF THE FUTURE IS THE PAST A Press Conference of Academician V.I.Molodin, Head of the Western-Siberian group of the North-Asian expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the SB RAS, devoted to the televised question and answer session of the RF Prime Minister V.V.Putin with leading archeologists of Russia, has been held at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the SB RAS in late July.
	SAYANO-SHUSHENSKAYA HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION: A YEAR HAS PASSED, BUT IT’S EARLY TO DRAW THE LINE The working group of the Siberian Branch of the RAS concerned with analysis of the processes occurring at the Sayano-Shushenskaya HES, and creation of systems for SShHES monitoring with use of the resources of the Branch, has been created by Decision of the SB RAS Presidium two weeks after the accident, on September 4, 2009. Currently, the results of the group’s work are being prepared for publication, but already today scientists consider it possible to acquaint the public with its basic conclusions.
	GEOMECHANICS - FOR EFFECTIVE MINING Probably, there is no mineral in nature remained which has not been investigated by geology. Just enumerating the minerals being of value for contemporaries will take away a lot of time. For their extraction from the earth crust interior, the technologies of industrial extraction and processing have been developed, are developed and will be developed. But, if the object of geological study appear to be separate minerals, the technologists should deal with rock masses, having a complicated composition and structure.
	HARMONY OF COLOR IS IN SOUL The Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has awarded the 2010 Premium of Ac. Koptyug V.A. for the work “Transformations of the Belarus folk-ethnographic tradition in Belarus and in Siberia”.
	COMPETITION FOR GRANTS TO YOUNG SCIENTISTS FROM THE NOVOSIBIRSK CITY COUNCIL The period for submission of application forms for participation in the competition will cover August 13 through September 13, 2010.
	YOUTH AND NANOTECHNOLOGIES Yet in 1950s, employees of the Kirensky Institute of Physics have started works on synthesis and research of nanomaterials - thin magnetic films - under the direction of the outstanding scientist, whose name is now confined to the Institute. Now this line of research is being developed at a new level.
	“YOUR STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO LISTEN” The International Summer School-Conference “Algorithmic Problems in Group Theory and Related Areas” has been held in Altai from July 27 through August 7.
	FEVER OF COLD NUMBERS: APOLOGIA OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES For the recent twenty years of the post Soviet history the mass media diligently form in public opinion an image of the Russian Academy of Sciences as an archaic, inefficient and just parasitic structure, eating away the money of taxpayers. But is it really so?
	MONEY FOR MODERNIZATION. HOW MUCH MONEY IS NEEDED AND WHOM IT SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM? The slogan of modernization will become (and is already becoming) the next simulacrum, until it is not clear how much money it needs and where from, whom from it is to be taken. This question is not being put by the heads of the Russian state and consequently their numerous appeals to modernization are so far nothing but starry-eyed dreams.
	IT’S TIME TO SUM UP The Meeting of Admission Committee held at the Novosibirsk State University in early August, resulted in drawing up the lists of applicants and in enrollment based on the results of Unified State Examination. It is high time to discuss this exciting problem.
	THE MAGISTRACY OF TWO NETWORK UNIVERSITIES OPENS IN THE NSU The Novosibirsk State University has coordinated curriculums within the framework of participation in two network universities - the Shanghai organization of cooperation and University of the CIS.

	FOR THE CUP OF CHAIRMAN OF THE SB RAS The Eighth Tennis Tournament for the Cup of Chairman of the SB RAS has taken place at the central courts of the Academgorodok Tennis Club within the first week of August 2010.
