     The Irkutsk Region is situated in the south of East Siberia (its area is 768 thousand sq.km., and the population 2847 thousand people). Forest occupying 75 per cent of its territory, hydro-energy, large deposits of oil, salts, and Lake Baikal are its main natural resources.

The Irkutsk Region is known for the Angara cascade of giant hydro-power plants, pulp-and-paper and aluminium plants, for chemical, aircraft and machine-building industries.
