	THE AIM OF SCIENCE – TO ANSWER THE “WHY” QUESTION Corresponding Member of RAS, the RAS Advisor Mikhail Vsevolodovich Kabanov has marked his 75th birth anniversary on July 25. His life is inextricably linked with the Tomsk Academgorodok: here he has passed the way from Researcher to the Organizer and Director of the Institute.

	GEOMETRY ACCORDING TO ALEXANDROV This year, mathematicians mark the birth centenary of Alexandr Danilovich Alexandrov, an outstanding geometer of XX century.
	ETHNONATIONAL PROCESSES IN THE MODERN WORLD The All-Russian scientific and practical conference with international participation “Modern World and Ethnic Processes” will be held in Yakutsk in frames of events dedicated to the Year of Unity and Friendship of peoples of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on September 20-21.
	SYMPOSIUM OF OPTICIANS AND HELIOPHYSICISTS The XVIII International Symposium “Atmospheric and Ocean Optics. Physics of the atmosphere” has been held in Irkutsk in early July.
	STABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY The 8th International Conference “Physics and Chemistry of Chemical Elementary Processes” related, like the other previous, to the name of Academician Vladislav Vladislavovich Voevodsky has taken place in Novosibirsk Academgorodok on July 15-21.
	CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS ARE SPEAKING At this International Conference, dedicated to the memory of V.V. Voevodsky, colleagues, many of whom personally knew this remarkable man and scholar, have met. Some of them worked with him, and some have been involved in the problems, “development” of which was started by Voevodsky together with his students.
	BIG DEPTHS. HUGE RISKS. ENORMOUS RESPONSIBILITY The 2nd Russia-China International Conference “Nonlinear Geomechanics and Geodynamics in Deep Level Mining” has been held. It has gathered miners, geomechanical engineers, geophysicists - scientists and experts from Russia, China and other countries to solve today's complex problems associated with mine developing in various natural and man-made conditions.
	PLASMA EMISSION ELECTRONICS The IV International Kreindel Seminar “Plasma emission electronics” has been held in Buryatia at the Baikal Lake on June 25-30.
	INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LUMINESCENCE AND LASER PHYSICS Has been held in Irkutsk from July 16 through July 22.
	CENTER FOR INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY IS BEING DEVELOPED A Protocol of Intentions on setting up a joint research organization - Center for Industrial Ecology, has been signed during the visit of the delegation of China Academy of Engineering Sciences to Novosibirsk.
	EXPLORERS OF “QUEER” LAKES A joint seminar for participants of interdisciplinary integration project of SB RAS № 56 “Predictive modeling and interdisciplinary complex research of long-term dynamics of ecosystems of meromictic lakes of Siberia” has been held at the research station of the Institute of Biophysics at Lake Shira in Khakassia on July 10-11.
	TRAVEL TO MONGOLIA: IMPRESSIONS OF BOTANISTS A team of scientific staff of the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of SB RAS, taking part in a joint expedition with the Mongolian botanists, held in frameworks of the Agreement on Scientific Cooperation between the CSBG of SB RAS and the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Mongolia, has returned from a trip to Mongolia.
	THE YEAR 1928 FROM THE RUSSIAN HISTORY Two decades ago, in summer 1992, there was a landmark event for the country's history - the beginning of so-called “archival revolution”. The researchers have got an opened access not only to the previously classified documents and materials of public records, but also to the sources of departmental storage (archives of party bodies, security agencies, etc.).
	PART OF TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM The Tomsk Polytechnic University has become part of the technological platform “Materials and technologies of metallurgy industry”. Along with other universities, research and industrial organizations, the TPU scientists will participate in joint projects for increasing the performance properties of materials.
	GOVERNOR HAS MET THE TECHNOPARK SUMMER SCHOOL PARTICIPANTS A meeting of Governor of Novosibirsk region V.A. Yurchenko with the participants of traditional Summer School has taken place on July 25.
	FOR THE NEEDS OF REGIONAL ENTERPRISES The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation Policy of the Novosibirsk region has summed up the results of the competition for the target contract training at the master’s degree level using regional budget funds.
