CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE DISEASE PROGRESSING IS ACCOMPAINIED BY INCREASING OXIDATIVE STRESS

Oxidative stress plays an important role in development of exacerbations and progressing of COPD but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. The aim of present research is to study the role of oxidative stress in pathogenesis of COPD. We examined 135 COPD patients (58 female and 77 male) rural inhabitants of Taymir district at ages from 48 to 70. Questionnaire, spirometry, determination of content a sharp phase proteins and electronic spin resonance characteristics in blood fractions were performed. The stage of COPD was estimated according to GOLD standards. 52.2% of the examined COPD patients were smokers. Patients with mild and moderate COPD show adequate response to increasing activity of oxidative stress: rising level of methemoglobin, which indicates the intensity of lipoid peroxide oxidation, is accompanied by increasing antioxidant activity of blood plasma - rising level of ceruloplasmin and transferrin. The most marked oxidative stress was found in patients with severe COPD: higher level of methemoglobin, free radicals and decreased antioxidant activity of blood plasma and erythrocytes. Statistically significant (p<0.05) negative correlation (r=-0.49) between degree of gravity of COPD and content of superoxide dysmutase, between ceruloplasmin of blood plasma and activity of inflammation - C-reactive protein (r=-0.43) was found. Positive correlation between levels superoxide dysmutase and non-hem iron (r=0.71), free radicals of erythrocyte and methemoglobin (r=0.46) was found.
