Performance and Health in Cold Climate
The tendency to the wide usage of expeditionary shift labour schedule in Western Siberia while developing natural resources in extreme conditions in the North of Russia has allotted new principle tasks in prevention of consequences of relocations resulting in enhanced morbidity, reduction of working efficiency, biological and psychological comfort.
Dynamics of body mass index (BMI) in males working expeditionary shifts in Langepas town in Tyumen region, Russia have been studied prospectively for 3 years. 1691 males were examined during primary screening, later on BMI dynamics were studied in 20% random samples. The duration of work in the extreme North conditions was consistently increased from 2.3 years during basic examination to 2.9, 4.3 and 5.6 years respectively in the 20% samples. In males with BMI>=29.0 kg/m2 overweight was recorded.
According to BMI level, rise of average values was revealed in males at the age of 20-29 in comparison with the first screening data in two (24.2-24.8 kg/m2,p<0.05)and three years of prospective study (24.2-25.2 kg/m2,p<0.001). In the fourth life decade significant rise of BMI levels was recorded in a year (25.7-26.2 kg/m2,p<0.05) and further - in three years of prospective study (25.7-26.7 kg/m2,p<0.001). In the fifth life decade no significant changes between BMI average levels was observed during monitoring. In the sixth decade significant changes rise of BMI was revealed over a three years` period (26.9-29.3 kg/m2,p<0.001). 90% cut-off point of percentile distribution has risen from 31.6 up to 33.5 kg/m2. On the whole in the population sample of rotation workers BMI rise was recorded in two and three years of prospective study.
The data recieved show the necessity to work out a program of primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases for people working expeditionary shifts in the Middle Ob oil producing complex when the duration of work in the extreme North conditions is longer than 3 years.
