Kets are a small Siberian ethnicity numbered 1494 according to the population census of 2002. They mainly live in the settlements of the Turukhan region and in the village of Sulomay of the Baykit region (Krasnoyarskii Krai).
The demographic database for the Kets population comprises data on approximately 1000 persons. It was created on basis of the field works (1991, 1997, 2000, 2001 years) carried out in most places Kets live. This data base includes data on name, sex, age, ethnic affiliation, birth and residence place, genealogy, and women's reproductive data. We analyzed population distribution pattern, level of mixing with other ethnicities, age-sex composition, marriage structure, migration activity, and main reproductive parameters characterizing the Kets population. According to historical settlement of their habitation, the Kets population was subdivided into three territorial groups (Podkamennotungusskaya, Eloguiskaya, and Turukhanskaya) and its relative genetic isolation was estimated. Only 34% of all persons who self-identified their nationality as “Ket” had no any other, than Kets, ancestry. Whereas other 66% were Ket metises with Russians, Selkups, or Evenks. Part of these metises amounts to 80-94% in age group under 20 years old. Ambiguity of the national self-identification among metises in the Kets population had probably influenced the dynamics of Kets number reported by the last censuses. Analysis of age-sex composition revealed predominance of prereproductive age persons (50.4%) and a relatively large reproductive size of the Kets population (39.4%). Reproduction potential of postreproductive women was estimated. Mean number of pregnancies and live births per women were found to be 5.5±3.1 and 3.9±2.5, correspondingly. Total pathologic pregnancy outcomes (including miscarriages and/or medical abortions) were found to be 28.9%. Part of offspring died before reproductive age was found to be 8.2%. Potential impact to the next generation defined as a part of offspring survived to reproductive age - 62.9%. The contemporary Kets population is characterized by extended reproduction, however the growth of this population will probably be determined by its mixed part.
The demographic database is a basis for systematization of different genetic and medical data on the Kets population and for its demographic and medical-genetic monitoring.
