State Medical Research Institute for Northern Problems of Siberian Division of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Krasnoyarsk)

Introduction: We studied the peculiarities of lipoid metabolism in northern nationalities, genetically relative to one another, the inhabitants of similar climatic geographical conditions, facing different stages of urbanisation.

Study design: The Evenks (this population lives traditional life) and the Evens (urbanised population). The research seasons were winter and spring.

Methods: Biochemical, thin layer chromatography.

Results: In the Evenks we marked evident seasonal fluctuations of lipoid metabolism levels. During low temperature period (December) the concentration of common lipoids and phospholipoids increased in blood serum. We revealed the increase of the content of the indices of lipolysis-lipogenesis. They represent compensation and adaptation mechanism for providing temperature homeostasis and we regarded it as the result of long adaptation process to the extreme factors of high latitudes. In the Evens there are no seasonal fluctuations of these indices. This fact can testify the presence of anthropologic and ecological tension in the population.

Conclusion: The changes in the traditional life style in northern aboriginals are associated with the state of higher anthropologic and ecological tension.
