State Medical Research Institute for Northern Problems of Siberian Division of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Krasnoyarsk)

Introduction: We studied social economical status of two Mongoloid northern populations, genetically relative to each other, the inhabitants of the same climatic geographic area.

Study design: Native people of Evenkia (the Evenks) and Yakutia (the Evens).

Methods: Questionnaire.

Results: In Even population the share of elder age groups is bigger than in the Evenks. In the structure of professional occupations the share of reindeer breeders was smaller in the Evens, the share of workers and students was bigger. The Even reindeer breeders’ labor is better organized, structured and equipped. They use snowtractors, radio for communications, besides, the Evens work by shifts. There are twice as much people with special technical or high education among the Evens as compared to the Evenks. Per capita income in the Evens is evidently higher than in the Evenks.

Conclusion: Social economic status of the Evenks in Evenkia differs much from that in the Evens in Yakutia. Traditional life style is better kept by the Evenks than by the Evens.
