The level of urbanization of 26 indigenous numerically small peoples of the North and the Far East of Russia was studied by the data of the 2002 all-Russian census. The study touched upon the regions of their primary settlement.

The share of the urban population in all studied groups is 28.07%. The lowest level of urbanization (5.81%) was indexed among the Tofalars and the highest (56.71%) was stated among the population of the Oroks (Ulta). Among the peoples with more than 1,000 p., the Selkups are characterized by the lowest level of urbanization (14.91%) and the highest is held by the Mansi (49.99%). The overall numbers of this ethnic group are not connected with the level of urbanization.

The share of women living in the city is higher than that of men for practically all ethnic groups (mean 57.56 and 42.44% accordingly). The high level of female migration to cities leads to the gender disproportion among the rural part of indigenous population. As a result, the probability of Northern males marrying inside their ethnic group is reduced. In its turn it aggravates the stressing pressure of negative social factors (Kozlov & Vershubsky, 1999). The hypothesis of urbanization’s influence upon the process of ethnic assimilation is examined. Non-demographical growth was chosen as an indirect index of stability against the assimilative processes. It is calculated as a difference between natural (number of births and deaths) and migrational dynamics of population as well as the changes in the group size according to the results of the 1989 and 2002 censuses (Bogoyavlensky, 2004). It was discovered that intensity of non-demographical growth is not connected with the share of urban population in an ethnical group.

On the basis of the implemented investigation it is possible to suggest that in modern conditions urbanization process does not essentially influence ethnic assimilation of the indigenous northerners of the Russian Federation.
