Background: The reported incidence of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) caused by rupture of a cerebral aneurysm has previously been to be 9.3 per 100 000 per year among Greenlandic Eskimos. This may have changed due to the improved means of transportation and better diagnostic possibilities. The distances in Greenland are great and transportation of seriously ill patients is often difficult which may deteriorate outcome since time is an important factor in the treatment of SAH.
Objectives: To evaluate incidence and outcome of SAH among Greenlandic patients who survived the acute attack and was admitted to a neurosurgical department in Denmark.
Study design: Retrospective study based on records. Only patients with the diagnosis SAH and angiography showing one or more cerebral aneurysms were included.
Results and conclusion: 92 patients were admitted to a neurosurgical department with the diagnosis of SAH and positive angiography during the period 1995-2005 giving a crude incidence 16.7/100 000 (CI 13.4-20.5). Average age was 47.0 years (range 27-70) and the sex ratio 62% female and 38% male. The highest incidence (53.3/100 000) was in the age-group 50-59 years.
The incidence was significantly higher than the one reported in 1983 (p=0.007) and higher than seen in Danes (9.25/100 000) and other Western populations (2.8-9.7/100 000). Outcome will be discussed and compared to other studies.
