CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN CIRCUMPOLAR REGIONS OF ASIAN NORTH

Nikitin Y.P.

Institute of Internal Medicine of SB RAMS (Novosibirsk 630089)

The major part of the population of the Russian north is Caucasian. Aboriginal population is about 1,3 million people, and small nationalities – 150.000.

Material and methods: Basic monitoring on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and on the prevalence of risk factors we hold in Novosibirsk, according to the principles of standardization and control of the WHO project MONICA. In Chukotka, Yakutia, Transbaikalia, Khakasia and Altay we hold occasional screenings of representative samples and register cardiovascular events. Results: In comparison with other MONICA centers Novosibirsk has high prevalence of hypertension (48% in population of age 25-64) and cerebral stroke events. Annual trend of stroke is 1.6 %, and of myocardial infarction - 3.8%. Aboriginal population of south-east part of Siberia has higher prevalence of hypertension and cerebral stroke than in Novosibirsk, and smaller prevalence of coronary heart disease. Aboriginal population of the northern parts has less number of hypertension and atherosclerosis-associated events than in Novosibirsk, in spite of the fact that growth rates of last years are higher.

Conclusion: Investigation of the of different CVD risk factors (metabolic tests, nutrition, alcohol consumption, trace elements, social aspects), along with the special molecular-genetic studies, helps better understanding of peculiarities of CVD in aboriginal and alien populations of circumpolar regions.
