Introduction: This paper is devoted to the study of cancer incidence among the North inhabitants (native and migrant) of Siberia and Russian Far East. The native population was presented by inhabitants of Tundra (Chukchi, Eskimos, Nenets and others) and Taiga (Evens, Mansi, Comi and others). The cancer incidence among the native inhabitants of Southern regions of Siberia served as a background for this study.

) Materials and methods: Database on cancer patients was collected in the Cancer Research Institute (Tomsk) during the period between 1976 and 1990. The cancer incidence of the main nosological forms was studied. The epidemiologic statistical methods were used.

) Results: Relatively high cancer incidence in the North inhabitants (1.4-1.7-fold higher than the average values in the region) was noted. The native inhabitants were found to have a higher cancer incidence compared with migrants (21.3% times higher among men and 13.5% times higher among women). Tumor diseases in the native inhabitants of the North are observed more frequently than in those of the South (3 and 1.8 times, respectively). It should be noted that the incidence of esophageal cancer is higher in Tundra than in Taiga. Skin cancer is encountered rarely in the native inhabitants of the North as compared with migrants of the North and the native inhabitants of the South. Such cancer localizations as breast, uterine corpus, ovary and thyroid gland are observed very rarely in the North inhabitants.

) Discussion: The results obtained point to the presence of specific features in the cancer incidence among inhabitants of the North.
