Human Homeostasis in High Latitudes

Panin L.E.

Institute of Biochemistry of SB RAMS (Novosibirsk)

In high latitudes in the conditions of severe ecological factor metabolism in a man is disturbed:the content of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, macro- and microelements is changing. And it influences chemical content of blood. The new level of homeostasis in the organism creates conditions for formation of other ecologically feasible health norms. The specific feature of these changes is more extensive use of fats and less use of carbohydrates for energy needs. The role of proteins in energy exchange is growing. Need for water- and fat soluble vitamins is changing, it is growing as well as the need in antioxidant protection. All these changes were described as polar metabolic type (Panin, 1978).

This fact proves that protein-lipid diet is the most optimal for a man in the North. But urbanization of the North, its growing geo-planetary role creates a lot of problems for mechanisms of adaptation to extreme ecological factors. The main of them are: high level of emotional tension and changes in breaking traditional diet. Both factors influence human homeostasis very much both in natives and newcomers. Both factors often acts parallelly and lead to stable and long - lasting changes in homeostasis that cause overweight, cardiovascular pathology ( hypertension, CHD), endocrine pathology ( diabetes) and other diseases. Diseases of civilization which were not common for native population and were rarely found in newcomers of the North are widespread today.
