Plenary session
The overall world production of fermentation products in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, chemical, cosmetics, diagnostic areas is approximately shared according to a ration 60 to 40 between “traditional bioproducts” and recombinant DNA products.
The detailed analysis on the cost of production of “traditional bioproducts” shows accurately the influence of the different cost components: raw materials, energy, manpower, maintenance, technology performances.
The situation of these components is analysed in details for the main geographical areas of production in the world and the requirement for and ideal location and layout of the production sites are suggested together with the different technological choices and their impacts on the production cost.
The industrial efficiency in productivity and cost of production are not enough however to explain the extreme success of China fermentation industry where, together with massive import of technology from western countries, a third consecutive terms of 5 years planning is promoting biotechnology as a priority field of development, providing to private industry financial support for investment, privileged prices for energy and raw material purchase.
According to our analysis Russia is the most privileged place where biotech industry can develop taking advantage of its climate, water availability, energy cost, excellent educational and scientific environment.
