In the last 25 years the panorama of biotech products has dramatically changed both in terms of target and in terms of market and producers.
The fast development of r - DNA technology has presented on the market new products addressed to specific illness or to specific area of activity as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, agriculture, energy etc. In this quite short period of time the traditional market for pharmaceutical products has transferred its turn over from 98% to 60% if referred to the traditional biotech products (Antibiotics, vitamins, anticancers, alkaloids).
From a purely geographical point of view the switch of the producer from western countries to India and mainly China has been even more dramatic if referred to this segment of the market. This amazing development has however lights and shadows and shows great opportunities for country like Russia when the basic components for the implementation of this type of industry are present at the highest competitive level: science, manpower, low cost energy, cheap raw materials.
Strategic implication of this policy suggests that a comprehensive approach to the challenge is requested where the private initiative of industrialists and investors must necessarily join together to an adequate and legislative frame.
