AUTONOMOUS TEMPERATURE MONITORING: INSTRUMENTATION

Duchkov A.D.

Institute of Geophysics SB RAS,
Russia

Temperature monitoring is an essential feature of instrumental base for studying global climate and environment change. It is usually used at different types of prognostic, seismological, permafrost and hydrological testing grounds. A general provision of instruments (for autonomous temperature measurements) remains behind a research needs. A new autonomous temperature logger with 8 channels was developed in the Institute of Geophysics SB RAS allowing long-term regime measurements. This instrument is based on the 16-bit analog-digital converter (AD7714) and a microcontroller that operates the logger. A resolution of temperature measurements makes 0,002–0,003°С. The temperature logger is characterized by a large memory, low power consumption, it is simple in usage and maintenance. A special modification of the logger is designed for temperature measurements in sediments of deep-water basins. As an example of the device operation we present the results long-term (~360 days) temperature monitoring in sediments in a deep part of Southern basin of Baikal Lake (station coordinates - 51° 54,064' N, 105° 36,448' E, water depth - 1350 m). The experiment has been started on March 28, 2003 and finished on March 11, 2004. Measurements were made 16 times per day. Temperature data showed that temperature field in sediments was non-stationary during almost the whole period of monitoring. Pronounced temperature variation had amplitude 0,01 - 0,07 ºС and duration from one day to several months. The research was supported by RFBR grant (04-05-64433а) and the SB RAS Integration project № 147.
