The Republic of Tyva is one of the boundary territories of the Russian Federation in the Centre of Asia. It has the unique weakly developed natural-resources potential of scarce types of mineral products. Explored deposits of nonferrous, rare, and precious metals, and rare-earth elements are of high value. Reserves of coking and energy coal of Ulugkhem basin, as well as nonmetalliferous raw materials for building industry have great importance for development of the republic economy.

On the basis of materials of geological surveying, geological prospecting, and geological exploration, carried out earlier within republic, the authors have systematized, in relatively condensed form, information about location, physicogeographical conditions, level of study, peculiarities of geological composition, actual and probable reserves of the most promising deposits and occurrences of ores and nonmetalliferous minerals of the territory.

Within the framework of the Competitive projects of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences “The Basic Problems of Management of Resources Potential of Tuva and Adjacent Regions with Use of Geoinformational Systems and Technologies” and “The Mantle-crust Ore-magmatic Systems of Precious- and Rare-metal Specialization in Metallogeny of Tuvinian-Mongol Segment of Central-Asian Folded Belt” a database of mineral objects of the region is formed. The use of modern informational technologies has permitted creation of the geoinformational environment for optimization of access to the geographically referenced information on deposits and occurrences of Tuva and Mongolia, and creation of local databases on scarce types of minerals.

The geographically conditioned part of informational resources has been presented by a geological map and a map (scale 1: 500000) of mineral resources on the territory of Tuva, large-scale geological maps and sections of some deposits (Khovu-Aksy arsenide-cobalt; Elegest hard coal; Ulug-Tanzek tantalum-niobium; Karasug carbonatite rare-earth; Ak-Sug gold-copper-molybdenum-porphyry, Kyzyl-Tashtyg pyrite-polymetallic, etc.). The quantitative and qualitative information has been presented as attributive tables of dBASE format and textual files, referenced to the objects by “Hot Link”. It contains data on basic parameters and features, characterizing deposits and occurrences of mineral resources.

GIS-project has been carried out in the process of compiling of the forecast-metallogenic map (scale 1:1000000) of mineral resources of Tuva and adjacent regions; it has permitted collection and summarizing of information about the overwhelming majority of occurrences and deposits, ores of which contain tantalum and niobium, cobalt and arsenic, copper and silver, gold and platinoids, copper and molybdenum, plumbum and zink, lithium and zirconium, bismuth, mercury, tin, rare-earths, and other important components. The database contains coordinates of the objects, composition of basic and associated components, data on formational character of the object and its genetic features, information about discoverers and short textual characteristics of the object by means of “Hot Link”.

The projects have been created in ArcView GIS, MapInfo programs.

GIS-project “Mineral resources of Mongolia” has been created on the basis of the catalogue “Metals and Industrial Minerals Deposits and Occurrences in Mongolia”, scale 1:1000000. The database includes coordinates of deposits, composition of basic and associated components, their formational characteristic, mineragenetic specialization, and genetic specific character.

The creation of geoinformational database, undoubtedly, has the great importance for planning and management of nature economy on different levels (federal, regional, etc.), and familiarization and attraction of investors to take decisions on mineral resources development.

The work has been carried out with financial support of Russian Foundation for Basic Research: grant 07-05-00601
