Now digest is a popular information product. However, there are a few studies of history and development of the digest. In this report, the transformation of the notion of digest is considered, the existing forms of digest are classified and the spheres of their distribution are defined. Four types of digest are presented here: 1) printed (paper) digests, 2) electronic digests (as versions of the paper ones), 3) Internet (on-line) digests, 4) tele- and radio digests. The digests issued by libraries, their structure and purpose are studied separately. The special accent is made on electronic editions of digests.
