The examples of zoogeographical maps of the Moscow Region for today practically are not present. The discussed map of terrestrial vertebrate habitats (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians) is made on the basis of a topographical map of scale of 1:500000 and geobotanical and landscape maps developed at Geographical faculty, MSU. The computer version of the map is created by means of MapInfo 5.0 Professional GIS and FoxPro 2.6 for Windows DBMS packages.

Wildlife habitats are complex and include sites of various types, their resources satisfy requirements of many species, breadth of which territorial connections is various. Small sites, homogeneous on a set of resources, we name biotops. Habitats are complexes of biotops of the various orders. Actually vertebrate habitats (basic units shown on the map, 453 cells) - provide requirements of rather small animals. They are united into habitats of structural elements of communities (63 cells), appropriate to needs of average and rather large animals. They, in turn, develop into complex habitats of vertebrate communities (9 cells), answering to requirements of large and very large species. Everyone concrete habitat in a legend of the map (table of DBF-format) is characterized by a number of parameters. There are share of forestry territories and open spaces (fields, meadows etc.) of total area and their parity, classes of a parity of the basic types of biotops, types of forest (main wood-forming tree species), average size (extent) of concrete biotops, average distance between the villages and towns in the cell, indexes of mosaic or urbanization.

The developed map is universal concerning different species and groups of terrestrial vertebrates and allows quickly to generate the simplified versions with reference to concrete groups, in view of covering of territory by factual material on the given vertebrate group and data on its ecology. The map of bird habitats of the Moscow Region now is in such a way already made, which legend contains 9 basic types of habitats, and its cells with significant participation of a wood are subdivided for 6 categories (wood formations). On this basis the small-scale computer map of bird communities of the Moscow Region is working out today basing on the materials and using original software of the Data Bank developed in Laboratory of Zoological Monitoring of Institute of Wildlife Systematic and Ecology SO RAN (Novosibirsk).
