Databases and GIS Technologies

Web site “Flora and Fauna of Magadan Region” was created due to financial support Project Harmony Inc. (USA). The goal of project is the preparation of Internet resource as scientific, educational and reference data base. Scientists of Institute of Biological Problems of the North and associates of Northern International University were involved in fulfillment of this project. Cooperation of scientists promoted the high level of represented materials. The structure of web site includes scientific, semipopular and methodological materials on flora and fauna of Magadan region, Chukotka and Kamchatka. These materials are represented by text documents, tables, drawings, maps, photos. Web site is popular in broad circle of users: scientists, teachers, students, environmentalists and amateurs. Web site has 9 divisions with subdivisions: flora and vegetation (general information, vascular plants, mosses, lichens, fungi, forests, flora of islands, publications), fauna(general information, fish, amphibian, birds, mammals, reptiles, publications), fresh water flora and fauna (biological field station, amphibian insects), environment (Red Data Book (Animals), Magadanskyi Reserve), photogallery, Geographic Information Systems, Reindeer Husbandry (general information, types of reindeer ranges, journal “News of Reindeer Husbandry”, conception of stabilization of reindeer husbandry, law on reindeer husbandry, educational materials, references (list of internet resources on similar themes within Russia and abroad). Data base takes 50 Mb totally.

Web site is updated constantly, design is changing, navigation becomes better, new structure of multimedia division with bird songs and animals, video on wilderness of the region is elaborated.

Web site “Flora and Fauna of Magadan Region” is registered as data base in Informregister on 1-st August 2000 under N6390 verification, register number 0220006761.
