The luminous bacteria with unique visual marker are convenient objects for the decision of many fundamental problems and practically important tasks of medicine, ecology, and biotechnology. Bioluminescence can be used as a source of the information about processes in cells and populations, spatial structure of ocean waters. The long-term works on sea bioluminescence have resulted in creation of a unique culture collection of sea luminous bacteria (CC IBSO) which contains more than 700 strains, allocated from various points of World Ocean, and typical strains of luminous bacteria. CC IBSO serves base for reception of vectors with luminescent genes cloned in various organisms, for search producers of various target products, and also for development of the bioluminescent biotest. On the basis of CC IBSO the demonstration means for laboratory works in maximum and high school are created.

The database on natural luminous bacteria supported in CC IBSO is one section of the database BIOLUMBASE. Under elaboration of database structure it was necessary to reflect all variety of properties and communications of examined objects, to ensure a fast way of reception of the information about any interesting attribute. The designing of information system was made with the help of CASE-means Platinum Technology ERWin 3.5.2. The verbal descriptions and formalized data use in a database as well as circuits, diagrams and photos. The database structure of electronic collection represents system of the tables connected determined relations each of which describes this or that information category (essence) characterized by a number of attributes (attributes) is complete enough its determining. Subsection "Metabolic reactions " characterizes properties that are important for taxonomic definition of strain and his practical use. It reflects the basic physiological-biochemical characteristics of strains, data on production of vitamins, endoenzymes, spare substances, which can be claimed in biotechnology. Subsection "Luminescent system " is one of key for the section "Natural luminescent microorganisms " and BIOLUMBASE as a whole. In it are submitted many-sided information on luminescent system of luminous bacteria: phenomenology, structure, kinetic characteristics, and communication with general cell metabolism, influence of physical-chemical factors on luminescence, regulation and control of lux-genes expression, areas of application. This subsection is a part through which the communication with other sections developed BIOLUMBASE will be carried out. The users can receive not only catalogue information about strans, but also data on properties, functions, use, references, and to make search øòàììîâ on any set of attributes.

The work is supported by grant from RFBR ¹ 00-07-90111.
