Institute of Biological Problems of the North (Magadan)

There is unique plant collection in Institute of Biological Problems of the North FEB RAS (IBPN). There is Herbarium in Laboratory of Botany. The main materials of this collection were gathered by A.P.Khokhrjakov and scientists of organized by him Laboratory of Botany. 2 January 1997 Herbarium was awarded Index Herbariorum – MAG. Herbarium materials were collected about 30 years and count more than 10 000 sheets of vascular plants, duplicate fund and fungi herbarium. Herbarium is arranged and is kept according to Engler system, species within genera - according to alphabetical order. Each genus has label with Dalla-Torre number. Species are kept in covers with sign of geographical division adopted in Herbarium: Chukotka, Kolyma, Okhotia, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Kuriles, Primorje, Chabarovskyi region, Yakutia, other areas.

The collections from North Okhotia, Kolyma and Chukotka are richest. There are more than 1500 species in flora of these regions. Herbarium from abroad is also represented. It was collected during visits of scientists in foreign countries (USA, Iceland, Svalbard and others) or obtained as exchange (herbarium from Japan, Greenland etc.). Herbarium of IBPN was a base for A.P.Khokhrjakov during his writing “Flora of Magadan Region”. Herbarium was widely used by Russian scientists who visited Magadan especially during preparation of 8-volume edition “Vascular plants of the Soviet Far East” as well as foreign scientists. But currently due to very high airfares herbarium of IBPN is unavailable for scientists even from neighboring cities Yakutsk, Petropavlovsk, Vladivostok. One of the way to make this unique collection of the Russian North-East available is the creation of virtual herbarium using digital technologies. We do not neglect the importance of publication of traditional hard copies (paper) catalogs similar to catalog that was published for Sakhalin Herbarium. Advantage of publication of catalogs on CD-ROM is their big capacity for recording on CD-ROM information, possibility to escape high expenses on traditional publication, easy placement on Internet of the part of information and transmitting inquired information by e-mail. In the Lab of Botany currently simultaneously with preparation of electronic catalog of Herbarium in EXCEL the work on making dotted digital maps of species of Magadan region and Chukotka within the whole Russian Far East is conducted. Color drawings, slides and photos are scanned and store in JPG format. All this information is recorded on CD. In future scanning of herbarium samples and connecting them with dotted maps and the lists of locations are planned. Accomplishment of publication of 8-volume edition “Vascular Plants of the Soviet Far East” with dotted map for each species makes real similar project for the whole Russian Far East as a color digital supplement to 8-volume black and white hard edition.

Note. Abstracts are published in author's edition
