Chironomidae (midges) are one of the prosperous object for cytogenetical, genetical and molecular study of microevolution process. Now a lot of data on genetical and chromosomal polymorphism are accumulated in literature and there is a great necessity to summarize these data. Besides, it is very important to study more thoroughly the genetical and cytogenetical structure of natural populations in accordance with parallel analysis of taxonomy and ecology of chironomid to understand population divergence and to organize biomonitoring. The "Chironomidae: SPGV" database will summarize the results of our 40 year research on chironomid morphology, karyotype description and chromosomal polymorphism in natural populations of North Eurasia (Palearctic) and North America (Nearctic), in total about 70 species from tribe Chironomini (subfamily Chironominae). The data base includes 10 tables assotiated by subject: "Karyotype", "Chromosomal polymorphism", "Banding sequences description", "Genomic polymorphism", "Larvae morphology", "Pupa morphology", "Imago (male) morphology", "Imago (female) morphology", "Populations", "Waterbodies". Each table can be filled out independent from the other. A connection between tables is realized by means of species name. The database allows us to systemize all information on the distribution of different genotypes in different waterbodies, to analyze the regularity of chromosomal polymorphism, to reveal the role of different rearrangements in karyotype divergence and speciation. We obtained the data about regularity of chromosomal polymorphism and karyotype divergence in several Holarctic chironomid species in Palearctic and Nearctic. Analysis of inversion sequences phylogeny are carrying out by the comparison of polythene chromosome banding patterns to understand a regularity of chromosomal evolution in groups of sibling and related species and in the genus Chironomus as a whole. Also at this time the database mostly contains a data on cytogenetics and morphology of chironomids, we are planning to include a data on isozyme polymorphism and known DNA sequences. The work is supported by Interdiscipline integration project SB RAS N 66 "Fundamental problems of biodiversity and dynamics of ecosistems".
