Using XML for universal data conversion

In process of development of the application the database structure can be modified - new tables and fields are added, types of fields are changed etc. But live system has a lot of registered users, and current database is filled with actual data, that cannot be loosed. The problem of data conversion arises.

The method of universal data conversion was implemented using translation of actual data to XML code. Then obtained XML code (1) is converted to new XML (2) using specially created XSL module that contains business logic of the conversion. Then obtained XML code (2) is translated to data of new database. Translator is implemented in Java.
