Free falling of spheres (due to the difference between the gravity and the buoyancy forces) in a quiescent homogeneous fluid has been studied experimentally. Data on the trajectory of motion and three components of the velocity vector are obtained. It is shown that the spheres undergo a zigzag motion with regular frequency of fluctuating horizontal velocity. The results are compared with the flow characteristics of restrained spheres. In particular, it is found that the drag coefficient of the free-falling spheres is higher while the Strouhal number is nearly two times lower than the corresponding values measured at the same Reynolds number for the restrained spheres. The study has been supported by SB RAS (under grant No. 1-2000 of the Integration Project).
