In this study the fracture mechanics problems having geometrical and physical nonlinearity were experimentally investigated by photoelastic coating method. The plastic strain development in the mild steel and duraluminium tensile specimens with central and side notches, which imitated primary cracks, was studied. Pre-failure stresses were determined near sharp notch tip for one from specimens. The sign of the second principal stress inside plastic zone is discussed. The obtained experimental results were compared with results of other researchers.
