On the peculiarities of numerical modelling of the ocean dynamics in sigma-coordinate system

The terrain following sigma-coordinate is one of the numerical techniques for the vertical coordinate presentation in the ocean models. At least two questions to be carefully considered arise in the new transformed system of equations. They are connected with the errors in the horizontal derivatives approximation near the steep topographic slopes. The first of them is the approximation of the pressure gradients, transformed into the sum of two large terms, which are basically cancelling each other. The second point for the long-term modelling is the description of the temperature and salinity diffusion. The suggested method for the solving of these problems permits to carry out the numerical experiment for the simulation of the World Ocean climate based on the numerical model in sigma-coordinate.
