In the present work the interaction of shock waves generated by two wedges immersed in a supersonic stream at different angles of attack is considered. The analysis of shock polars gives that the angles of attack can be chosen in such a way that a configuration with a reflected wave of the strong family should arise.
Numerical simulations of the flow have been performed. The 2D Euler equations have been solved with an algorithm based on a high-order TVD scheme. As a result, the above-described configuration has been indeed obtained. Its important feature is that the flow behind the reflected shock of strong family is subsonic only within a small region. It accelerates downstream and reaches a supersonic velocity again due to the interaction with the expansion fan originated from the trailing edge of the wedge. Consequently, no special outflow boundary conditions are required for realization of the reflected shock wave of strong family.
Also, a number of other interesting phenomena has been studied. It has been established that, when increasing and decreasing the angle of attack continuously, the transition from regular to irregular reflection and the reverse transition occur at different angles so that a hysteresis is observed. For the irregular interaction shock wave configurations with both common direct and so called inverse Mach reflection have been obtained.
