Abstracts

With STN International, the greatest global network of scientific and technical information, taken as an example, the current stage of the online information systems' evolution is characterized. In comparison with information resources accessible free in the Internet the advantages of online networks of commercial databases, especially a combination of data careful selection and indexing with powerful command (search) language, is highlighted. Recent integration of the online hosts' traditional service with Web interface facilitating an access to relevant information for the continuously growing number of end-users is emphasized. The installation of Full Text Solution option in all searching platforms makes it possible for user to pass from bibliographic references directly to documents' full texts at the Web sites of the corresponding Publishers. Novel function of the online databases, namely their transformation from facts (documents)' storages to powerful analytical instruments for the extraction of knowledge from information (data) is briefly discussed.
