Background: Traditions of the Heart is a randomized controlled trial of a group intervention aimed at reducing risk factors for CVD among urban dwelling Alaska Native and American Indian (AN/AI) women aged 40 to 64 residing in southcentral Alaska. Materials & Methods: In October 2000 a CVD prevention study tailored for Alaska Native women was initiated. The aim of this ongoing study is to assess biochemical and behavioral aspects of CVD risk factors and to determine if a short group intervention results in short term lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of CVD. Results: Of the 1334 women who enrolled between October 2000 and July 2005, 21.4% had elevated total cholesterol, 10.9% were hypertensive, 78.8% were either overweight or obese, 5.4% had impaired glucose tolerance, 33.5% were current smokers and 18.3% had metabolic syndrome. The effect of intervention dosage by education subject on change in biochemical markers will be described. Conclusion: This project has successfully integrated a CVD screening project for AN/AI women who had not presented for CVD events. Recommendations for CVD risk factor intervention in this population are delineated to guide population health improvement efforts for urban dwelling AN/AI women.
