The history and social context of Inuit tobacco tradining in Canada

Minich K., Reading J.

University of Toronto (Toronto)

Inuit tobacco smoking rates are among the highest in the world. Daily Smokers of Inuit Identity, Canada 2001 Age Male Female 15-19 years 61% 60% 20 years + 62% 59% Due to environmental factors, pre-contact traditions associated with tobacco use are likely non-existent. To explore the rapid uptake in tobacco consumption in the period after European contact historical trading records were analyzed and oral stories were collected from Inuit Elders. Historical records of trade indicate that tobacco was a highly valued commodity traded by Inuit in economic relations with early Euro-Canadians and also in a social context among Inuit. Framing tobacco use in the context of oral tradition and history of the tobacco trade may be a powerful health promotion tool for reducing tobacco misuse among Inuit children and youth.
