Этнические особенности здоровья северных народов

Objective: Review major population health surveys in Canada with samples of Inuit respondents to characterize the status of health data on this population.

Study Design: Literature review

Methods: Objectives, identity, jurisdiction and samples sizes were identified from the surveys and presented chronologically. Regional and other sub-sets of the Inuit population were noted where information was available. Full reference and source of survey are given.

Results: Data are available on Inuit for a relatively short time span, however the sizes and statistical power of the data in terms of secondary analysis are yet to be determined. From a community-based perspective the development and application of health indicators require refinement, from identity to self-reported behaviours this survey information requires substantially more input from Inuit.

Conclusions: Regionally based information is not uniform across all of the Arctic in Canada. Uniform data collection is the exception, rather than the norm for Inuit health indicators. Those data that are regionally tailored contribute greatly to the body of health indicators. As land claims process across the Arctic are implemented and a national Inuit identity is carved from the social-political environment, inter-regional comparisons may be of interest to health researchers working with Inuit in the Canada’s Arctic.
