In this talk I will briefly present the main research activities carried out in Pisa in the field of telecommunication networks. The goal of this presentation is to give some ideas about possible collaboration, taking into account previous experiences and existing projects at national/European level. Roughly speaking, our research topics include theoretical (such as rare event simulation and network tomography) as well as architectural aspects. In this framework, we are interested in network architectures able to provide QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees to end users, and mainly to DiffServ-aware MPLS, which combines quality differentiation typical of DiffServ with Traffic Engineering capabilities of MPLS. These new network architectures are not only analyzed from a simulation point of view (our group is developing extension to NS-2, a well-known public domain simulation tool, in order to properly simulate these new protocols), but also (at least partially) implemented in a test-bed, currently under development in our lab, consisting of a backbone with high-performance commercial products (namely, Juniper routers) and an access network, realized with Linux PCs, able to support the features of DiffSer-aware MPLS. Another research field is related to network security, mainly in the framework of anomaly-based Network IDSs (Intrusion Detection Systems): the basic idea is to apply advanced statistical signal processing techniques (such as high-order Markov chains and co-occurrence matrices) to reveal anomalous features in the traffic flows
