This talk is devoted to the numerical analysis of small disturbances of laminar duct flows, i.e. velocity and pressure deviations from the steady state. The kinetic energy density of such a disturbance composed by a weighted combination of stable modes has a potential for a large time-limited amplification. Studies of the effect are concentrated usually on the optimal disturbances which cause the maximal possible energy growth and whose knowledge is important in courses of laminar-turbulent transition and robust flow control investigations. While the numerical study of the optimal disturbances in flows with mean velocity dependent only on one coordinate had already been performed, the study for other duct flows was undertaken only recently because of the large computational cost. However, the cost can be significantly decreased by applying the algorithm proposed in [Boiko, Nechepurenko, Sadkane. Proc. 14th Int. Conf. Methods Aerophysical Research, Section II, Paper 5, Novosibirsk, 2008].

We present and discuss the latest version of the algorithm and demonstrate its efficiency with various flows in ducts of constant cross sections.

The study was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (project N 07-01-00658) and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Grant N RNP.2.1.2.3370.
