On a high performance block implicit procedure for the numerical solution of incompressible fluid flow problems

Mazhar Z.

Eastern Mediterranean University (Mersin 10)

A newly proposed [1,2] high performance implicit procedure, based on a block incomplete decomposition of the full set of discrete equations for incompressible fluid flow is presented and discussed. The procedure paves the way for a new generation of hybrid solution algorithms, especially effective for the treatment of the well known velocity-pressure coupling problem. With its very simple formulation, the procedure does not require the solution of any Poisson equation and it is shown to be faster by a factor of three, compared to the long-used segregated solution procedures. It is demonstrated, on a couple of benchmark problems, that: a) it is robust, tolerating a wide range of relaxation factors, b) time relaxation is virtually eliminated, and c) significant reduction in the solution cost and memory requirement can be anticipated. Prospects of further developments and enhancements are also discussed.
