The cultural gender differences of patients with adjustment disorders

Kuznetsov V.N.

Northern State Medical University (Arkhangelsk)

• The objectives of our investigation were: the patients with adjustment disorders and people without health problems. There is the shortage of information about cultural gender differences in Russia in connection with adjustment disorders today.

• We tested 173 patients with adjustment disorders and 97 health persons. There were 195 women and 73 men. We used psychological and psychophysiological tests for getting information of “self-estimate in social space”. Then we compared the traits of the gender groups.

• The principles governing the technique were comparison between two gender groups of patients and control groups for discovering key traits.

• We have discovered the women with adjustment disorders are anxious for aggression and the men – for independence. The women use the cognitive way of coping and the men – the “vegetative” one. There are not such differences in the control group. So being in the conformity with the cultural gender image results in mental wellness and good adjustment and the tendency to break the social rules can result in adjustment disorders.

• As a result, we used mostly the cognitive therapy for women and relaxation therapy for men. We can use less medicine for patient with adjustment disorder. We use target-oriented psychotherapy instead it.
