A number of concepts (correctness, uniform correctness) were proposed in the works of N.N. Yanenko, which stimulated the development of practical methods for stability investigation of difference schemes. We present in this survey our results on the development of new methods for stability investigation of difference schemes (with the aid of catastrophe theory, methods of constrained optimization). A number of new criteria for the sufficiency of the von Neumann condition have been obtained.

A new concept, the uniform stability of difference schemes, is proposed. It identifies a class of difference schemes, which do not have scheme oscillations in time. The constructive criteria for the construction of uniformly stable difference schemes have been obtained.
