Numerical simulation of gas dynamics in argon electric arc plasma generator was performed. The research of the plasma flow was done basing on magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) plasma equations. In mathematical model elaborated we took into account thermal nonequilibrium of plasma flow, turbulence, near cathode processes and their interference with processes in arc. On the basis of the above it was possible to close the model without the need to have additional experimental data about near cathode zone.

The numerical method was based on SIMPLE algorithm and QUICK differencing scheme. The discrete equations were solved using effective Buleev method. Simulation results show electrodynamics and thermal characteristics of the near cathode zone and also the dynamic flow structure. Swirl and electric current variation influence on near cathode and arc processes were studied.

Research presented has important theoretical and practical value for optimization of arc plasma generator constructions in variety of technological applications. The results are also important for minimization of electrode erosion rates.
